CANCER DRIVE 25 KIDS CARING FOR KIDS: REMEMBERING LAURA COTESTA
The 2020 – 2021 Lockerby school year was set in the middle of the global COVID-19 virus. Regular routines were subject to changes to ensure student, staff, administration, and community safety. Still, cancer could not be ignored; Sudbury children with cancer and their families were still coping and needed the support of their northeastern communities. Lockerby continued to answer their call as the community celebrated 25 years of LCS cancer drives in Sudbury!
Lockerby Cancer Drive Committee under Principal Craig Runciman
Co-chairs Grade 12 LCS students: Vanessa Cimino and Rebecca Sorgini
Student Committee: Dulain Abeyratne, Caston Antonioni, Ava Bard, Kaitlyn Brouillette, Avery Cusson, Sophie Daly, Staysha Kasunich, Sophia Lilley, Summer Lowes, Jordan Malo, Abigail Oshell, Miriam Siddiqui, Alison Smith, Darren Tymeczko, Nethra Wickramasinghe
Teacher Representatives: Ms. S. Benton and Ms. K. Rodriguez
While times were different, the committee adjusted, combining familiar methods of fundraising with new approaches. For example, a Lockerby Cancer Drive Mask, was a highly successful addition to student apparel, as well as winter toques.
With much of the world in isolation and an increase in the number of local COVID-19 cases, door-to-door canvassing was impossible. As a result, on-line donations were implemented through NCF, the Northern Cancer Foundation. All contributions to Lockerby’s Cancer Drive were donated to the paediatric unit of NCF. And Sudburians moved beyond their own individual COVID situations and continued to support the Vikings’ efforts.
A total of $5,600.00 was collected. The Lockerby Cancer Drive, after 25 years, was still edging closer to its $1 million milestone, helping children with cancer, one at a time.
